Crochet a Beanie Hat with Earflaps and Braids for All Ages

I made a toodler size for him and  it fits perfectly.

This crochet beanie hat with earflaps is perfect for beginners to practice. It only uses Chain, Double Crochet and Slip Stitches. I made this pattern as a base for my future hat projects.  Be creative, use this pattern to make your own owl hat, bear hat or fox hat, etc. I have a lot of ideas in mind. Don’t worry I’ll be sharing it with you in the future.  I stayed up late last night just to finish this pattern. It payed off, I already finished it and I’m sharing it with you guys. Here it is.



Materials Needed:
worsted weight yarn 2 colors         white         color of your choice, (I used lavender)
5.5 mm crochet hook measuring tape
yarn cutter


Instructions:

 
 
Newborn to 3 Months
 
 
dimensions:
                 circumference – 12-13 ” 
                  height       –   5″ including earflaps
Hat
Round 1: Magic Ring, Chain 2, 10 DC in magic ring, join, (10DC)

Round 2: Chain 2 counts as a DC,DC in the same stitch, 2 DC in each around,join, (20 DC)

Round 3: Chain 2,DC in same stitch, DC in next, (DC inc, DC in the next)* repeat 8 times, join, (30 DC)

Round 4: Chain 2, DC in same stitch, DC in next 4, (DC inc, DC in next 4 )* repeat 4 times, join,  (36 DC)

Round 5-8:  Chain 2, 36 DC, join (36 DC) Don’t fasten off, start working on the earflaps.

Earflap 1:

Row 1: 6 SC, turn

Row 2: SC dec, 2 SC, SC dec, turn

Row 3: 4 SC, turn

Row 4: 2 SC decreases, turn

Row 5: 2 SC Fasten Off. Weave ends

Earflap 2:

Row 1: count 13 stitches from your 1st earflap, 6 SC, turn

Row 2: SC dec, 2 SC, SC dec, turn

Row 3: 4 SC, turn

Row 4: 2 SC decreases, turn

Row 5: 2 SC Fasten Off. Weave ends SC on the edges using a white yarn

Braids:

Cut 4 strands of white yarn and 2 strands of lavender yarn ( 12″ each ) Fold them in half and pull the folded side with a hook to the center bottom part of the earflap. Pull the ends of the yarn to the loop. Divide the strands in 3 parts. Start braiding. Tie a knot to finish.

Baby(3-6 Months)

dimensions:

                 circumference – 13 -14 ” 
                  height       –   6″ including earflaps
Hat

Round 1: Magic Ring, Chain 2, 10 DC in magic ring, join, (10DC)


Round 2: Chain 2 counts as a DC,DC in the same stitch, 2 DC in each around,join, (20 DC)


Round 3: Chain 2,DC in same stitch, DC in next, (DC inc, DC in the next)* repeat 8 times, join,(30 DC)


Round 4: Chain 2, DC in same stitch, DC in next 2, (DC inc, DC in next 2)* repeat 8 times, join,  (40 DC)

Round 5-10:  Chain 2, 40 DC, join (40 DC) Don’t fasten off, start working on the earflaps.


Earflap 1:

Row 1: 6 SC, turn

Row 2: SC dec, 2 SC, SC dec, turn

Row 3: 4 SC, turn

Row 4: 2 SC decreases, turn

Row 5: 2 SC Fasten Off. Weave ends

Earflap 2:

Row 1: count 14 stitches from your 1st earflap, 6 SC, turn

Row 2: SC dec, 2 SC, SC dec, turn

Row 3: 4 SC, turn

Row 4: 2 SC decreases, turn

Row 5: 2 SC Fasten Off. Weave ends SC on the edges using a white yarn

Row 6: 2 SC dec, turn

Earflap 2:

Love this pattern and found it on Ravelry. The fact that it was free was also a big bonus for me. The only problem I had was I could not find a way to actually download it. I clicked on all the links I could find and it took me to the Craft Guild site. I could find a way to download there either. One thing that I wish those talented creators of patterns would do is to number their pages in their patterns. It is so frustrating to print a pattern out and have to figure out what page… Read more »
